Mother’s Day is around the corner, and as much as your mom may have appreciated those handmade macaroni necklaces, it’s about time she got an upgrade.
On May 6 and 7, WCC’s Ceramics Club will have its annual Mother’s Day Pottery Sale, giving you plenty of options for mom with a variety of student-made kitchen ceramics like bowls, cups, mugs, vases, planters and much more.
Students enrolled in WCC’s ceramics courses are automatically members of the club, though it’s up to them if they want to participate in the sale. Usually, 20 to 30 students choose to participate.
The ceramics club was started in 1984 by ceramics professor Paul Nash who wanted a way to generate funds to bring in guest artists, who could help expose students to different styles and techniques, and to raise money for scholarships so that students could go to workshops.
Over the years, the purpose of the club has changed to helping subsidize the art program in general, such as funding the costs to operate the kilns and keeping a proper inventory of supplies like kiln shelves and earth minerals.
Periodically, the club has given money for scholarships when there has been a surplus so students could go to workshops.
The club exposes students to the vocational part of art, giving them the opportunity to commercialize their work and challenging them to improve their art skills.
The sale also introduces them to what is involved when it comes to marketing and wholesale. Last year’s sale grossed $8,000 to $10,000.
