Drawing on the imagination

Though at times they’re deceptively simple, sketches can send very powerful messages. This fall, 18 artists are joining together to send their individual messages out to the community.

“The Drawing Show” will be open from Oct. 23 to Nov. 20, Monday through Friday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. It will also be open Monday - Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. It will be closed on Nov. 11 (Veteran’s Day) and Saturdays. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.

Poetry with a passion

In Chinatown at the intersection of Hotel and Smith Street, there is a small club called Next Door.

Inside, itʻs dim; red and blue lights alternate from behind the DJ on stage.

A single disco ball rotates from the ceiling, casting white dots along the red brick walls.

There is a din of voices from the crowd and poets. The vibe is very laid-back as the DJ plays a mix of music from hip-hop to jazz and reggae.

This was the venue for October’s First Thursday Slam Poetry event.
