Upward Bound program helps students succeed

upward-boundThe Upward Bound program at WCC works closely with students at Kailua High, Castle High and Kalaheo High to prepare them for academic success in high school, college and beyond through monthly school visits, Saturday academies, academic support and free mentorship and guidance through the college search and admissions process.

“We run workshops ranging from personal statements and resumes to financial aid,” Upward Bound guidance counselor Justin Pagan said.

The program serves incoming high school freshmen through graduating seniors. Students need to apply for the program as it only serves those who meet certain financial requirements and those who will be the first in their families to attend and graduate from college.

“Students in Upward Bound get consistent engagement and planning while they are with us,” Pagan said. “We have the opportunity to work one-on-one, alongside the Saturdays that our students give up in order to better themselves and to gain a different understanding of different pathways.”

The goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from postsecondary education institutions.

Although the program primarily works with students in high school, Pagan said that if students need assistance with post-secondary endeavors, they are always willing to help.
