Football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and dodgeball. These are the intramural sports that you could participate in this year at Windward Community College.
Run by the student life office, WCC’s intramurals offer a way to meet new people, stay active, relieve stress from school and exams, and have fun.
Alaka’i Pang Kee-Shimbukuro, student life coordinator assistant, said that they provide “a community for the students.”
Up first this semester is flag football, which began Sept. 17 and runs until Oct. 29. Games are Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Moanalua Community Park in Salt Lake. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays around 3 p.m. at Kāne‘ohe District Park.
The team, under captain Devin Acoba, is currently preparing to compete in the 2019 Intramural Leesports Flag Football League Championship, against flag football rival school Kapi‘olani Community College.
Volleyball is next, running Nov. 5 to Nov. 26, with games at Halawa Gym on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Practice days will be planned by the players based on their schedules. The deadline to sign up for the team is Oct. 30.
WCC student and volleyball captain Karl Boland said he wants the volleyball team to “reclaim what is ours” this season and to dethrone Honolulu Community College, which beat them last year.
While other campuses in the UH system have intramurals, Kee-Shimbukuro said, “WCC is more family-oriented compared to the other community colleges. WCC is also more you could say ‘extra.’ We like to have fun while the other community colleges are more boring and serious, almost like a ‘stone city.’”
To become a WCC gamecock (the team name was inspired by the chickens that roam the campus), students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average, show proof of being a WCC student and have the correct clothing for physical activities. No athletic experience is required.
