Are you looking for a volunteer program that’s right for your degree? Or service hours for your scholarship requirements?
WCC’s service-learning program will have its annual fair Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 12 to 2 p.m. in ‘Ākoakoa 101-105.
More than 100 community organizations were invited to the fair to share with students the volunteer opportunities they offer during the semester.
Instructors at WCC can give course credit to students who participate in service-learning.
To receive course credit, students must complete 20 hours of service-learning and have it confirmed and signed off by the volunteer organizations.
The purpose of service-learning is to provide students with opportunities to apply their coursework to real world situations, explore careers, improve their job skills and contribute to the community.
Organizations such as Castle Medical Center, for example, have volunteer opportunities to help those who plan to go into the medical field.
Students can also find myriad volunteer opportunities working with young children, assisting at environmental sites, as well as many others.
“Students feel very positve about the real life experiences they have when involved in service-learning for their academic classes and often express their feelings that giving back feels really good,” said Sharon MacQuoid, WCC service-learning coordinator.
Some new service-learning sites this year are Legal Aid Society, Hau’ula Elementary School, Aloha Rehab Center, Kahalu‘u Church, Sunshine School, Goodwill Industries in Kailua and Ke Ola Hale at the Ko’olau Baptist School.
At the fair, students can talk directly with volunteer coordinators, pick up informational handouts and submit applications.
